Sanding with shot blasting is a surface finishing method that prevents cracking of metals, also used for cleaning and strengthening the surface. In this method, the role of a shot is to remove rust, impurities, surface contamination, or other debris that can affect the strength of the metal. It is an environmentally friendly process and a fast, cost-effective surface finishing method used for cleaning, polishing metal and other surfaces by applying a high velocity stream of round media.
What is blasting?
Also known as abrasive blasting, blasting is the technique used to shape, peel and smooth the surface of materials. Commonly used for smoothing or grinding metal materials, you can visualize this process as a person using sandpaper. Although it is the same technique, sandblasting allows for a more appropriate finish, one that provides an even texture across the entire surface of whatever material is being used. If the object has a bit of curvature or sharp edges, this method will ensure that no random spots or deep cracks remain without being fully sanded. This process can even make an item look like new.
What is the use of sanding with shot blasting?
Shot blasting is often used to prepare surfaces before welding or after welding a new product (removal of rust or paint) and then to improve the adhesion of coatings (eg paint or galvanizing). The impact of the grain on the metal surface puts the surface layer in compression, and this effect can be beneficial, for example, in reducing stress corrosion cracking in aluminium and steel alloys.
The round shape of the metal alice produces a clean, smooth and polished surface through a peening action created by the acceleration of the equipment used. In a peening application, steel shot is also used to impart compressive strength to load-bearing metal parts such as crankshafts, engine turbine blades, and heavy-duty springs.
